Innovative organizations
The foundation has sought to support innovative approaches to issues in society. These approaches are often led by entrepreneurial individuals with the drive and skills to build a program.

Children's programming in arts and cultural institutions
The foundation has supported major arts and cultural institutions in the Boston, Massachusetts area. Most of this funding supported programs for young people.

Development of future leaders
The foundation has funded a number of initiatives that help develop future leaders.

National media
The foundation has supported national media-related projects including:
  • Bill Moyers television specials The Language of Life with Bill Moyers (on the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival), and The Global Report Card (on environmental issues)

Documentaries
The foundation has provided funding for several documentary films and video productions including: Development of new fields of interest
The foundation has served as a catalyst in the development of new fields, including alternative medicine, religion and ecology, and conservation medicine.
  • Alternative medicine
Provided early funding for the Center for Alternative Medicine Research and Education at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston www.bidmc.org and the University of Massachusetts Medical School (mind/body work) www.umassmed.edu Provided funding for Body and Soul, a documentary on alternative medicine
  • Religion and ecology
Helped establish the field of religion and ecology through support for the Thomas Berry Foundation (www.thomasberry.org) and the Forum on Religion and Ecology, now based at Yale University (fore.research.yale.edu).
  • Spirituality
Provided support to The Center of Rational Spirituality, which is dedicated to the betterment of humanity through the integration of ancient spiritual wisdom and modern rational thought. www.rationalspirituality.org
  • Conservation medicine
To help address the problems of disease transmission among wildlife, domesticated animals and humans, the foundation has provided support for EcoHealth Alliance (formerly Wildlife Trust) and its affiliates, the Consortium for Conservation Medicine and the Wildlife Trust Alliance. www.ecohealthalliance.org
